North Face and College Students

Before I came to college, I had only occasionally seen young people, or anyone for that matter, wear "The North Face" brand clothes. For those of you who don't know, The North Face makes clothing and supplies for hiking, camping, and extreme climates. Lately, I have noticed that The North Face brand clothes have spiked in popularity among college students. The fleece jackets seem to be the most popular item that The North Face offers, but anything North Face seems good enough for most.

I think The North Face is popular because they offer comfortable clothes that can be worn in almost any situation. Whether your trying to look classy and go out to a nice restaurant or just want to be comfortable when you study at the library, North Face is very appropriate and effective in either situation. The thing that caught my attention regarding The North Face is how popular it is with college students. Although I'm sure North Face is popular among other groups of people, I think the crowd that has taken it in the most is college students. Considering fleece jackets exactly like North Face have been around for who knows how long, I just find it weird that, what seems like, 90% of college students choose to buy a black North Face jacket.

This brand of clothing seems to constitute popular culture because it seems to be the most widely accepted type of outerwear among college students. It also seems to make a statement that the wearer is "classy, but comfortable" at the same time; I'm not too sure about that, but that's just the vibe that I get.

I've got to agree with you on this one. After reading your post this morning it got me thinking. On my way to class which is on the other side of campus, I saw at least 7 North Face bookbags as well as many black Fleece along with various other types of jackets. People are willing to pay a premium for the name brand of "North Face" while they can buy a similar product for a fraction of the cost.

I absolutely agree with both of you. But then it got me thinking, what was the "it" jacket of yesterday? Does anyone remember when the cool thing was to have a "Columbia" jacket? The brand also sells many supplies for lovers of the outdoors, but it seems to have fallen by the wayside for this new trend that is "The North Face". Although I must admit to having a North Face fleece (although it's not the standard black one that so many college students seem to have) I do also think it is ridiculous that so many of us are following this trend, but for what? Are these jackets any better than Columbia, or any other brand for that matter? And is this brand going to stick around or is it just a passing fancy? Are we paying for a package that may keep us warm when it's cold, or are we just paying for a NAME?

I definitely agree on this, North Face is the “it” brand of today’s coats, especially with the fleece jackets. When you can pay the same expensive price for the typical black fleece as you would for the heavy version of the coat, which is a lot warmer, you know that it’s not the actual coat it’s the name or not even that but the style, probably because it is what “everyone” is wearing. It might even come off as a statement of your economic status as well as just fitting in with the crowd.

Yes, North Face is very popular with the college crowd. I wonder how it became popular in the first place - is it advertised a lot? Do celebs wear North Face? Anyway, It's so popular that it has its own knockoff puns. In Australia, there is company called South Face that also makes jackets, fleeces, bookbags, etc. (This is a pun because Australia is in the Southern Hempishere, hence South Face while America is in the Northern Hemishphere and North Face)As far as I know though, the South Face brand isn't as popular as the North Face brand here.
